It looks like high-end retailers such as Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue are redesigning their bags for increased durability and aesthetics. Check-out
this morning's story in the NY Times. The basic idea is to get people to reuse them while providing these companies with free advertising. And instead of thinking about bags as a liability, these companies are hoping that shoppers will treat these bags as great accessories. Now, if only I could afford to go shopping at these places! :0)
