I've read a lot of factual information about the amount of plastic in the Pacific Ocean. But seeing the story unfold on video is quite a different experience.

Two Gifts for Lake Michigan: Ammonia & Sludge

In case you missed the news, BP oil wants to expand their oil refinery in Whiting, IN in order to handle Canadian crude oil. Consequently, they're seeking permits to increase the amount of waste they dump into Lake Michigan.

BP oil currently dumps 21.4 million gallons of treated wastewater each day.

Now BP wants to add 50% more ammonia and 35% more sludge (i.e., solid waste) into their wastewater each day.

Is there anything we can do about this proposal? There's not much time, but we can act now. (Actually, we have until Friday to voice our concern.) IDEM will consider all written comments before making a final decision about BP's draft wastewater permit. You can send your comment by mailing, e-mailing or faxing them to:

Another Bag Dilemma: Plastic Bags and Trash

Since this project began, many folks have told me how they deal with their leftover grocery bags. What's the #1 household use of these plastic bags? Using them for trash. Recently, an elderly woman asked me the following question, which I've paraphrased here:

I use grocery bags for trash, thus avoiding the purchase of larger plastic bags. But if I use reusable bags, I'll have to buy larger plastic bags for my trash. Which is worse?

Brilliant question. Of course, the answer is not immediately obvious. It also reminds me of a chapter in the Cradle to Cradle book entitled, "Why being less bad is no good."

The problem with using plastic bags is that they're made with polyethelyne (i.e., crude oil and natural gas), which are non-renewable resources. Put in a different way, it takes just 14 plastic bags to fuel a car for 1 mile. So when plastic bags are used for trash, we're also throwing away valuable resources into landfills. Worse yet, as these bags photodegrade for the next 1000 years, they're releasing toxins and other hazardous materials into the environment.

The good news is that we can sidestep this bag dilemma by purchasing biodegradable trash bags, which are made from cornstarch and other renewable resouces. This is advantageous because it reduces our dependency on natural gas and crude oil. The single downside is that biodegradable bags will not biodegrade in the absence of oxygen; this is an issue because landfill covers reduce oxygen levels dramatically.

But let's curtail this downward spiral: If we used biodegradable bags, we can compost our food scraps and those bags. And in conjunction with the 3R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle), we could significantly reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills. Taken together, we can feel good knowing we're preserving earth's non-renewable resources by using biodegradable trash bags.

Texans Protest Against Indiana Wastewater

What does VX nerve gas, Port Arthur, TX, and Indiana wastewater have in common? Puzzled?!? So am I.

I just read a disturbing article in today's South Bend Tribune.

Turns out, residents in Port Arthur, TX are protesting against receiving Indiana's wastewater, which contain a nerve gas called VX. Ok, before I divulge anymore details, here are some basic facts:

* Port Arthur, TX is 90 miles east of Houston, TX (so it's located along the gulf coast).

* According to the 2000 U.S. census, the Port Arthur population is 57,755 (it's a small town).

To get a better perspective on these stats, I googled the distance between South Bend, IN and Port Arthur, TX. It's about an 18-hour journey (1,154 miles away).

But as I just discovered, the chemical plant is located in Newport, IN, approximately 70 miles west of Indianapolis:

Garbage $$$ & Energy

Since we started this plastic-bag conservation project, I am noticing more and more things that once seemed minor or uninteresting. I was watching CNN news and during the commercial time, I noticed a picture of waste management, but their message was to inform people about the energy produced from the recycled garbage, and that it contributes significantly in power. Approximately 10 million houses can be powered by this energy for a year. To use this kind of energy serves many purposes, such the land that was going to be used as a landfill, the environment from pollution by incinerators, and also in the long-term, money. I think it cannot be any greener than using energy from our garbage. I believe more people are going to involve themselves once they get the insight of these efforts.

More Recycling

I was in Chicago this afternoon, for some reasons I was more observant than usual, maybe because my fiance was driving. I happened to spot two garbage collector trucks, one following the other, first of all because these two trucks were holding traffic downtown Chicago, but also because of the smoke produced by the two old trucks. Immediately an idea came in my head: Are these recycling trucks or the normal garbage trucks?!?! I asked my fiance if he will shortly follow these trucks because I wanted to see something. He was not pleased because these two trucks were giving off too much smoke; he kindly followed them for a while and I noticed that they were collecting different kinds of recycable trash and I figured to myself that they must be using "dual" method and I realized for sure how polluting this method can be and how much it can increase traffic since they are stopping very frequently. Regardless of the method, I felt excited to see that someone was recycling. I believe with rising awareness there will be more we can give to our environment and future too, in return we can benefit more from our world.

Changing our habits

Flora and Amelia raised some good points in their posts regarding why we don't do more to change our habits and the fact that we often throw recyclable things away because of convenience. I've been thinking a lot about the price that we pay for convenience. I am just as guilty as the next person when it comes to convenience. I loved it when those Lysol disinfecting wipes were invented and I use convenience products all the time. My mechanical pencils are going to the landfill when I'm done with them and on and on and on. I personally did not think that this project was going to affect my life as much as it has and I'm sure that others would agree with me when I say that one of the most important issues here for students and for those who come to our Bag Festival is that through awareness of the issues we can all make small changes to our daily habits that add up to big changes. Composting isn't for everyone and I most likely will not give up all my convenience products, but yes, I can reduce the amount of trash I generate by eating less fast food, decreasing the amount of junk mail that I receive, using reusable bags, etc. It's overwhelming if you think about having to change all your habits and your lifestyle, but if we just commit to making one small change at a time, it makes the environment better for everyone.

fast food and poster ideas

This probably seems like a no brainer, but I've been really thinking a lot lately about how much trash is generated from eating fast food. The other day I was eating at Subway with my daughter and even though I've eaten at Subway many times, I was disgusted by the trash. Each time a Subway sandwich is made, the worker puts on a fresh pair of gloves, each sandwich is wrapped in paper and put into a plastic bag, plus the drink containers, and so on. Not to mention all those toys that come in the kids meals that usually end up in the garbage. I ended up bringing the plastic bags home to recycle, but it makes me mad that the restaurants don't have recycling receptacles at the restaurants. (I'm not picking on just Subway; this is true for all fast food restaurants.) So for now, I have sworn off fast food. Not only does it tend to be bad for your health and your budget, but it's bad for the environment too.

On another note, I think it would be a good idea if we had some educational posters at the Bag Fest. One could be for putting some of the garbage statistics on, one could be for ideas on how to make changes in your lifestyle to help the environment, etc. I've been tossing around ideas in my head, but I would like to hear if others are interested in making posters and / or contribute ideas to making them or have suggestions for information to include. Let me know your thoughts. They don't have to be fancy. The main purpose is to present some of the information we all have been collecting and reading about so that visitors to the Bag Fest can get the main ideas of that information.

I watched a show today called something like "Weird U.S.: The underground." It was just two guys that traveled around the united states looking at the secret underground worlds that our country was built upon. One of the cities they visited was St. Paul, Minnesota where a vast network of caves used to hide a speak easy during prohibition and an underground hide-out for notorious mobsters. The caves are still a hot spot for those of the night but only the front few rooms. Farther into the caves, they came across rooms off the main passage way and of course they investigated. Well what they found was garbage and the ruins of cities that had been ruined. When the rubble was cleared they had no where to dump it except in the caves where they figured it wouldn't hurt anyone. True we've been dealing with the environmental impact of garbage but what is ironic to me is that long after we are gone and our grand-children are doing their own study of garbage, our left-overs will still remain to tell out story. The footprint of garbage is much larger then I always imagine because it spans space, distance and time.

Lately I've been feeling really discouraged about the waste we generate: both the amount and the environmental impact. I've felt like there isn't any way to stop it; like we've already crossed the line. But for some reason the thought of garbage acting like a time capsule, long after we are gone (while partly gross) made me not so distressed about our garbage. Because not only our garbage but what we are trying to do with it to improve the condition of our earth will also be present for future generations to study and build upon. I know Royte talks about garbage excavators in our book and while I have no desire to actually go and do this I imagine it would be fascinating to see what people have left behind. People that may be long forgotten are still present through their trash. To me that gives garbage a whole new meaning and I just wanted to share that with all of you.

WHO THOUGHT GARBAGE WOULD BE SO EXCITING?

First I take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Verges for her tireless work to see we get to have our keynote speaker for the bag fest. I am so excited about it I do not think I have ever met any author of the books I read and never had a reason to until now. I am so eager to see this lady who is so passionate about garbage that has made a whole difference to her life and now mine. Hats off to you Michelle we are right behind you. I am also excited to learn that dealing with garbage can be quite exciting something I have never thought of. I am now more careful with my garbage than ever although reading chapter five of garbage land still left me in a dilemma. I was not sure I would be ready to go through the process of making composts and nurturing them or I would just do it to support Royte with turning our environment into gold with green waste. However, learning that this would help me in a lifetime is worth a task to endure. Statistics have never been this exciting!!!!!!

A Generator That Turns Trash Into Electricity?

On February 1, just a few weeks ago, Purdue University News published a very interesting article about their invention of a generator that turns trash into electricity. This generator is called the "tactical biorefinery." A group of scientists have created it to efficiently convert food, paper, and plastic into electricity.
This machine was designed for the U.S. military and it would allow soldiers to convert waste into power. The best part of all is that the “tactical biorefinery” will have civilian applications in the future.

A few thoughts on garbage!

The State of Garbage (2006) article that we read for class was disturbing to me. I wondered if anyone else felt embarrassed when they read, "The estimated MSW per capita generation rates varied from South Dakota's low of .07 to Indiana's 2.1 tons/person/year." This fact also made me realize how important our project is. Even though our efforts of saving plastic bags from the landfill might just not bring us down to the desirable .07, we are still bringing awareness! It is obvious that Indiana would not be able to drop their generation rates in one large movement, it is going to take small movements, like ours, to get anywhere! I know that this project will get people thinking in many ways and enlighten other aspects of Indiana's recycling and waste.

Oil from Garbage

Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that there may be an elegant solution on the horizon to the gigantic problem of garbage—and not just the kind that gets dumped in landfills, but sewage, too, along with agricultural wastes, used tires, and just about everything else. More good news: we might get to reduce dependence on foreign oil and pay less for gasoline in the process. The bad news? Forget about those electric cars or increased fuel efficiency; abandon hope of seeing your city skyline again—this solution, if it works, will keep internal combustion engines running forever.
What many investors are hoping will be the Next Big Thing is a technology called the thermal depolymerization process, or TDP for short. This patented process is being developed by Changing World Technologies of West Hempstead, New York, with its first full-scale plant already in operation in Carthage, Missouri. The idea behind TDP is not new—in fact, it’s millions of years old. Take organic matter, subject it to heat and pressure, and eventually you get oil. Of course in nature, “eventually” is usually an inconvenient number of millennia; TDP shortens that time to hours, if you can believe that.
A Well-Oiled MachineTDP is a surprisingly straightforward five-step process. First, raw materials are fed into an industrial-grade grinder where they’re chopped up into extremely small bits and mixed with water. The mixture is then subjected to heat and pressure, breaking molecular bonds and reducing the material to simpler components in as little as 15 minutes. The next step is reducing the pressure dramatically to drive off the water; in the process, some useful minerals such as calcium and magnesium settle out as a valuable byproduct. The remaining slurry is sent into a second reactor, which uses even higher temperatures to produce a hydrocarbon mixture. Finally, a distillation step divides the hydrocarbons into vaporous gas (a mixture of methane, propane, and butane), liquid oil (similar to a mixture of gasoline and motor oil), and powdered carbon.
All that to say: garbage in, (black) gold out. The process produces no waste materials, unless you count water, which can be recycled in the system. The gas can be used to produce heat for the machine itself; oil can be sent to refineries to be made into a variety of useful products; carbon can be turned into everything from water filters to toner cartridges; and the remaining minerals can be used as fertilizer.
Virtually any organic material can be fed into a TDP apparatus. By making adjustments to the combinations of temperature, pressure, and cooking times, various input products (referred to as feedstock) can produce a wide range of output products; the proportions of, say, gas to oil to carbon will depend on the composition of the feedstock. The first fully operational TDP system is being used to recycle the waste at a turkey processing plant. All the turkey parts that aren’t used as meat—skin, bones, feathers, and so on—are fed into the machine, thus solving a serious waste problem (up to 200 tons per day) while creating commercially valuable products. But TDP can also process discarded computers, tires (even steel-belted radials), plastic bottles, agricultural waste, municipal garbage…you name it. In fact, the city of Philadelphia is hoping to use TDP to convert the sludge that comes out of its sewage treatment plants into oil, which will later be used to generate electricity.
Nothing is too messy or too scary for TDP to handle. It can make clean, safe materials out of nearly anything. Even medical wastes, dioxins, and other biohazardous materials. Even anthrax, for crying out loud. Apparently the only kind of material this system can’t handle is nuclear waste—I guess you can’t have everything.
Pouring Oil on Troubled WaterThermal depolymerization is just now coming into commercial use, though similar processes have been known for decades. The problem was that they were always too expensive to operate; it cost more for the fuel to decompose the garbage than the resulting materials were worth. The inventors of TDP claim that it is highly energy-efficient—better than 85% in most cases. If that is true, and if it continues to be true on a large scale, then TDP may eventually be able to produce oil more cheaply than drilling, and get rid of garbage as a convenient side-effect—or vice-versa, if you prefer.
As fantastic as TDP sounds, the process does have its critics. Some engineers have expressed skepticism that the energy efficiency could be even close to what Changing World Technologies claims. Even supposing that it were, the oil needs of the United States are currently so massive that if all the agricultural waste in the country were processed into oil, it would still be just a drop in the bucket (so to speak). In other words, so the argument goes, the process holds more promise as a method of recycling and waste reduction than it does as a source of fuel.
The more optimistic viewpoint is that if TDP comes into widespread use, we won’t run out of oil as long as we have garbage. But that also means there will be less incentive to reduce oil consumption or seek out cleaner alternative power sources. Ah, but I suppose every silver lining must have its cloud. —Joe Kissell

Bowerman Landfill, Irvine CA Tour

This short video reviews several issues (e.g., hazardous wastes, methane) discussed in Garbage Land. I like the fact that you can hear some of the issues while seeing the visual images at the same time. It made this issue feel a bit more "real" to me because I've never been to a landfill! Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching the footage. :0)

garbage collectors

One of the questions from the chapter one assignment of "Garbage Land" was what our impressions were of garbage collectors. I always thought they had the worst job imaginable. They have to put in long hours everyday in all kinds of weather picking up other people's heavy, smelly garbage. That impression has just been reinforced with probably more respect. There is a side to their job that would be interesting however. They get to know all kinds of people, even if they never meet them, and learn how they live by what they throw out. I live in a fairly small, clean town so I don't get much exposure to the filth, trash, and pollution to the extent Royte talks about. To which I am very grateful. But if I did I'd either move or do a lot of protesting.

Dealing with Garbage

I am originally from Colombia; it is a beautiful country in South America. Unfortunately, it has very poor places where it is very easy to deal with garbage. Can you think of an experience you've had in dealing with garbage at a public venue? When I read this question, the first thing that passed through my mind was a memory of my mom asking me on a Saturday morning to go with her to “los tugurios”( we use this term when we want to refer to a very poor neighborhood near the big city garbage dumps). Why did my mom want me to go there? This is not only the question you are asking right now, but it was mine too. My mother used to go to “los tugurios” one Saturday per month to give food and money to the people that lived there; she also gave basic classes like reading, writing, sex education, religion and so on. At that time I was only 13 years old and I wasn’t sure if I was psychologically prepared to spend one day in a “garbage dump.” Getting there was a very long trip; we had to go by car then we had to park it and took a bus because it was very dangerous to drive into that neighborhood. Finally we had to take a taxi because buses don’t go into “los tugurios.” From the instance we took the bus I started to see and feel the ambient difference; I started to see garbage in the streets, and the smell wasn’t good. I also saw homeless people, garbage and more garbage… the farther we went, the more garbage I saw and the more penetrated the smell was. It was a traumatic experience because I couldn’t believe that people could live there. When we finally got to “los tugurios,” I was shocked when I saw the houses where the people lived. They were entirely made of garbage. Everything they used to build their small houses was taken from the big municipal garbage dump that was a few miles away. I had the opportunity to talk with a lady who showed me her house. The house walls were made entirely of cardboard. It was almost like a work of art. The ceiling was made of cardboard and plastic bags; her bed was an old mattress that she found in the municipal garbage dump… she had a collection of key chains that she had been collecting since she was 10 years old. All the people in “los tugurrios” knew that if they found a key chain in the municipal garbage dump, they needed to clean and return it to her. She had an entire “wall” full of key chains. She had key chains of cartons, movies, with all colors and shapes; some of them were from Aruba, New York, Japan, Cancun… from everywhere, it was amazing. She didn’t know how to read so she didn’t know that those key chains came from very far away; I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was very sad seeing how people literarily live of our garbage. They have no money, the only thing they have is the municipal garbage dump. It was a very nice experience to go there and share a few hours with the people from “los tugurios.” It made me very thankful for what I have.

Up Close and Personal

My personal experience of encountering garbage on a public venue was when I worked for one of the largest waste management companies in the world. New (office)employees were required to ride with one of the trash collectors for a day while they completed their route. I rode with one of the commercial trash collectors whose route consisted primarily of retail stores and restaurants. What stands out the most from my experience was the stench and enormous size of the Elkhart landfill. Actually being at the landfill, rather on top of it, to empty a full load of garbage half-way through the day made me realize how much trash people (myself included) generate over time. It spread out for acres, with birds circling the dump looking for something to eat, garbage trucks coming and going at a continuous pace, and an odor that I will probably never forget. By the end of the day, I had a new appreciation for trash collectors (and a complete loss of appetite for the rest of the day).
